Heat Safety Best Practices
Working in extreme heat takes a physical toll. Protect yourself by incorporating these daily habits into your routine:
1.Hydrate Constantly

Maintain consistent hydration by drinking water frequently throughout your shift. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to take a drink. Drivers should also have extra bottled water available for passengers, especially during periods of extreme heat.
2. Utilize Scheduled Breaks
Drivers should take advantage of scheduled break times to rest in shaded, cool, or air-conditioned environments to lower their core body temperature. This also helps ensure drivers are refreshed and ready to provide safe, attentive care to passengers.
3.Reporting AC Malfunctions

A comfortable vehicle is essential for your safety and the well-being of our members. Drivers are expected to keep their vehicle's air conditioning running appropriately at all times.
If your vehicle's air conditioning system fails to operate properly, report the issue to your Area Operations Manager (AOM) immediately.
Do not defer this until the conclusion of your shift. Timely reporting allows our team to resolve mechanical concerns efficiently and ensures we maintain a safe, comfortable working environment for all personnel.
4. Actively Monitor Your Team
At America West, we are more than colleagues—we are a family.
We encourage drivers to actively monitor both yourself and your fellow team members for any signs of heat-related illness.
⚠️ Recognizing Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Heat stress can escalate quickly. It is critical to know your body and recognize when something is wrong. Please seek supervisory assistance immediately if you or a colleague experience any of the following symptoms:
Excessive or unusual sweating
Dizziness or persistent headache
Nausea or stomach discomfort
Muscle cramps
Confusion or sudden weakness
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop driving, notify your supervisor, and seek assistance immediately.
Together, We Protect Our Team
Operational excellence starts with daily discipline, and that includes taking care of your health. Thank you for your continued commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
